Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children age 3 to 14 according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Although the law requires the use of car seats for children and most people use them for transporting children, the majority do not know the correct way to use car seats. Every year NEW teaches over a hundred child passenger safety education workshops for low-income parents and caregivers of young children and teaches thousands of parents how to use car seats correctly to avoid injuries and death.
In addition to providing the free workshops, NEW distributes free child safety seats to qualified workshop participants in Los Angeles County Supervisorial Districts 3, 4 and 5. See the Calendar and call (what ?) to make a workshop reservation.
Domestic Violence
Ending the cycle of domestic violence is one way to ensure the safety of the next generation. NEW partners with Peace Over Violence (POV), a sexual and domestic violence, stalking, child abuse and youth violence prevention center headquartered in Los Angeles which is dedicated to building healthy relationships, families and communities free from sexual, domestic and interpersonal violence. POV educates residents at NEW’s La Posada on domestic violence prevention and provides counseling and advocacy as needed. Residents report that as a result of the POV Program, they experience a higher level of self-confidence and better relationships with their children..
