In 2010 New Economics for Women celebrated its 25th Year Anniversary.
Here are a few milestones we achieved along the way.

 1985 – 2010: Twenty-five Years of Passion and Impact

1985 Began with a dream of Latinas from Comision Femenil

1986 UCLA conducted feasibility study and provided technical assistance

1987 Identified development sites in the San Fernando Valley

1988 Latina single parents determined community housing design

1989 Opened escrow on first site in Belmont area of Pico Union

1990 Opened first business office and hired executive director

1991 Fully funded the first affordable housing development with childcare and supportive services

1992 Acquired several locations to provide on-site social services

1993 Opened first affordable housing development - Casa Loma
“Project of the Year" by So CA Assoc of Nonprofit Housing
"Honoree for Partnership Achievement” by Social Compact


1994 Began construction on La Posada and La Villa Mariposa
"National Achievement Award for Services to Families" from Parent Magazine

1995 Opened La Posada, to serve single teen mothers and their children
“Great Western Shaw Award” for excellence in affordable housing
“Maxwell Award of Excellence” from Fannie Mae for Casa Loma


1996 Opened La Villa Mariposa to serve large families and seniors
“National La Promesa Award” for the Mariposa program

1997 Launched first bilingual home ownership educational/lending program.
Awarded $1.8 mil for rehabilitation of the Prosperity Center

1998 "Sustained Excellence Award"  from Fannie Mae Foundation
Opened Tres Palmas for large families

1999 Opened Guadalupe Terrace for single parent families in East LA
“Ray of Hope Award” from Hispanas Organized for Political Equality

2000 “La Promesa de un Futuro Brillante Award” from the National Latino Children’s Institute for La Posada


2001 Conducted charter school feasibility study and reached agreement with LAUSD to build and operate charter schools

2002 Established La Posada fundraising event paying tribute to mothers

2003 Opened NEW Academy of Science and Art (NASA) charter school

2004 Selected by United Way to operate Individual Development Accounts (IDA), a savings match program for NEW residents

2005 Opened EADS, Tierra del Sol, and NEW Academy Canoga Park

2006 “Maxwell Award for Outstanding Public Private Partnership”       
        "Charles L. Edison Tax Credit Excellence Award” for Tierra del Sol


2007 Opened Vista Monterey for seniors

2008 “Neighborhood Excellence Initiative Award” from Bank of America

2009 Welcomed Arroyo Vista Health Center as a tenant of NEW in the Prosperity Center

2010 Opened Dennis P. Zine Community Center in Canoga Park
Recognized as a “Top Performing Nonprofit” by California Community Foundation
 
 

25th Anniversary Celebration
NEW staff and guests paid tribute to the organization’s 25 Year Anniversary with a celebration at the Biltmore Hotel in December 2010. Bea Stotzer, cofounder and Board President of New Economics for Women, assembled an illustrious panel of NEW founders and long-term supporters to share their memories about the challenges and rewards of creating NEW.
