NEW Entrepreneurship
Social Entrepreneurship
At New Economics for Women, we define ourselves as “social entrepreneurs.” Like business entrepreneurs we are innovative, opportunity-oriented, resourceful, value-creating change agents. But what makes social entrepreneurs different from business entrepreneurs is that we have an explicit mission in mind -- to reduce poverty by creating wealth opportunities for families. When we generate revenue in our for-profit ventures, we create capital to invest in our work. Unlike business entrepreneurs, we do not use financial profitability as the benchmark of our success. Instead, we measure our success by improvements in the quality of life of our families, indicated by increased wealth, education and health, as a result of being touched by NEW. NEWCapital LLC New Economics for Women formed NEWCapital, LLC as a for-profit property management company. NEWCapital develops and manages the properties owned by NEW, and others, and has a long history of working with subsidized housing. Socos LLC A subsidiary corporation of New Economics for Women, Socos provides eco-friendly property maintenance and services all NEW’s apartments and community centers. Latino Tech Net Through a partnership with the National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB), NEW operates two Latino Tech-Net computer labs. The labs are broadband-enabled and have 20 computer stations each. Job seekers and entrepreneurs can take full advantage of the fast internet connections and multiple training stations at NEW’s computer labs by participating in free, bilingual computer training. Kitchen Incubator For many immigrant families, cooking and selling food specialties from their home country is a common entry point to starting a small business. The Kitchen Incubator program will assist participants in starting and operating food-based businesses. NEW is in the planning stages of developing a “green” shared commercial catering kitchen from which it will operate the Kitchen Incubator program. Anticipated program services include: food handling safety, culinary arts training, and specific assistance on how to operate a business including business planning, finance, marketing and product development. |
