“Connect and Succeed changed my way of thinking and the way I see life now. [The program] made me think about what I want to do when I grow up.”  Martha Mateo.

La Posada resident Martha Mateo was a single mother and thru her participation in NEW’s Connect and Succeed program, she is in college and applying for scholarships so she can get trained to counsel and motivate others.

Young Mothers and Children
NEW meets the needs of single mothers and their children by providing safe and affordable transitional housing for up to three years at La Posada. The beautifully refurbished 1940s hotel in the Pico Union area, just west of downtown Los Angeles, houses 50 to 60 single mothers and their children in single apartments with a communal meal area. In recent years, NEW has allocated up to 10 of the single apartments to rent to senior women.  NEW has found that the older women provide mentorship to the mothers and a sense of continuity and stability to the community.

High Expectations
The goal of the holistic La Posada program is for every mother to improve her financial, emotional, and physical well-being so she can achieve good health, financial independence and family stability. Each mother enters a social contract upon entering La Posada. Their personalized contract provides the structure, consistency, and goal orientation many of the  women previously lacked in their lives. By providing a safe and clean environment and raising the expectations of the mothers, La Posada makes a difference in the lives and dreams of two generations.

Single Mom Gains Hope
“I had to think of my daughter because I didn’t want her to see her father hurting me,” said 24-year-old Maria Rodriguez.  Maria moved to La Posada with her 4-year-old daughter Melanie last year to escape increasingly violent abuse from Melanie’s father.

Despite a harsh beginning and being forced to quit school at age 16 to help her family pay medical bills, Maria is an optimist and known for her kindness and the words of encouragement she offers other single moms living at La Posada.  NEW opened La Posada in 1995 as a place of refuge, healing and personal growth for single moms like Maria. La Posada has helped over 5,000 young mothers gain skills needed to stabilize their lives and then transition to permanent housing.

Maria’s days are now more joyful and she is completing GED courses and providing Melanie with a strong and supportive learning environment. Maria dreams of becoming a certified pre-school teacher. With La Posada’s help, she is already experiencing her dreams by volunteering at a local Head Start program. “The La Posada staff is always there to help me advance, they really help mothers and their kids.”
