“NEW’s contribution to the communities it serves is very basic and vital.  NEW nurtures the very root of the community with opportunities for family and individual personal and economic growth out of poverty. The communities in which NEW serves are always better and more improved from having NEW’s presence.”

Getting Stable

NEW Client Population
Over 95% of NEW’s clients are first generation Latino immigrants, both documented and undocumented, from Mexico and Central American countries. Over 50% of NEW's Latino resident families are single mothers with 3 to 4 children.  These families often struggle to find a home and a job, keep food on the table, and stay in good health.  NEW helps these families get stable by providing affordable housing, health and safety and other specialized services.

NEW Apartments
Especially in Los Angeles, affordable housing is often the most pressing need faced by low and moderate income families. Since 1985, NEW has responded to the call for clean, safe and affordable housing in Los Angeles by developing multi-unit NEW Apartments with units ranging from studios to five bedroom apartments.

Family Source Centers
NEW operates two FamilySource Centers (FSC) in San Fernando Valley locations - Canoga Park and Van Nuys. NEW also provides services at the FamilySource Center in the Pico Union area of Los Angeles.  All the FSCs provide a range of services for the whole family in a single convenient location.

NEW Communities
NEW believes the “Power of Place” has the ability to transform lives. That’s why our developments are centered on the needs of our residents. By combining affordable housing with services to meet the needs of its residents, NEW has developed several distinct NEW Communities in different geographic areas of Los Angeles.

Several NEW apartments, the NASA Charter School and the NEW Prosperity Center,  form the  NEW Community in Pico Union,  just few miles west of downtown Los Angeles. Tierra del Sol and the NEW Academy Canoga Park anchor the award-winning NEW Community in Canoga Park, located in the San Fernando Valley. And TobermanVillage together with Santa Cruz Terrace, are the pillars of the NEW Community in San Pedro.

La Posada
Single mothers and their children have a special haven at La Posada, a transitional home which provides a structured and supportive environment for mothers and children.

NEW Health
NEW offers nutrition sessions, food demonstrations, and access to health screenings as part of its NEW Health program.  Medical services are convenient and accessible at the Arroyo Vista Family Health Center located within the NEW Prosperity Center on Loma Drive at the heart of the Los Angeles Pico Union neighborhood.

NEW Safety
In addition to staying healthy, NEW encourages its residents to live safely. The purpose of NEW Safety classes is to provide practical safety information on topics such as how to use car seats properly.

The Next Step: Gaining Knowledge
At NEW we believe that the families we serve will be able to begin thinking and planning for their longer term needs only after they have addressed their fundamental economic and social needs.   When families have achieved stability and are ready to take the next transformative step, NEW is ready with the right combination of programs and services they will need for Gaining Knowledge.
