Whole Family Transformation

The CREATE Family Conference is the culmination of NEW’s  two year effort to bring together 400 Latino families from NEW’s housing developments, to: be inspired to lead better and informed lives as economic consumers; create a family project that supports family cohesion; and, participate in a one-on-one session with a certified financial planner to establish a family financial plan. The entire family will be in attendance to learn and grow in their knowledge around financial concepts that lead to economic security and prosperity.

The Conference will be a bilingual and bicultural experience with workshops and presentations conducted in Spanish for the adults and English for the youth and children. Keynote speakers invited to date include Luis Barajas, author of the Latino Journey to Financial Greatness and Nelly Galan, motivational speaker and creator of Adelante Movement, a Latina economic empowerment organization.

Prior to the conference, NEW is collecting baseline data and will survey families to help NEW customize the content of the conference and address specific family financial/asset needs and collect pre conference data on financial behaviors. An evaluation after the conference will give NEW an understanding of how the conference experience has changed financial behavior and decisions. The goal is to help families increase their financial knowledge that leads to increased assets by having a series of in-depth experiences as a family unit to reinforce asset-building knowledge and enrich family relations.

CREATE
The wealth gap is real.  Studies by the Pew Research Center shows that in the United States, wealth in white households exceeds that of Hispanic households by an 18-to-one ratio.

Financial Education for the Family
NEW's CREATE program addresses the wealth gap by teaching families how to think about themselves and their finances in a different way. It is a comprehensive program which initiates, supports and celebrates a transformational journey for the whole family.  Families that begin the program as consumers focused on today, emerge from the program as investors planning for tomorrow.

Topics Addressed
Families begin Gaining Knowledge in CREATE by completing two of NEW’s core programs:  NEW Success and NEW Money.  Families address important topics such as:

Budgeting Life Insurance
Credit Stocks and bonds
Remittances Mutual funds
Insurance Philanthropy
Guardianship College savings plans
Wills Changing beliefs
Savings Goal setting
Emergency funds Visualizing your future
Taxes Accountability
Retirement Changing behavior

By tackling these challenging subjects together, family members gain an increased understanding of their interrelated roles and responsibilities.  They also develop a greater appreciation of their family’s current prosperity and abundance, opening themselves up to “magical moments” of self-discovery and possibility.

Next Steps
Through CREATE, families go beyond learning to actually changing their behaviors. They begin steadily building modest wealth to leverage education, enable entrepreneurship, homeownership, and retirement.  Upon completing CREATE, families may be ready for the NEW Investments program, in which they are assigned their own trained financial advisor to help them develop a personalized plan of action to create assets that can be passed along to the next generation.
